Azumini Isiokpo Set to Celebrate 2025 New Yam Festival

Azumini Isiokpo community in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, is set to host its annual New Yam Festival on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at G.O. Ogundu’s Compound Azumini village – Isiokpo.

The festival, one of the most significant traditional celebrations in the region, symbolizes gratitude to God, the ancestors, and the gods of the land for a successful harvest season while seeking blessings for greater yields in the coming year.

Each year, people from all walks of life gather in Azumini Isiokpo to celebrate the cultural heritage of the community through music, dance, and communal feasting.

Described as a symbol of unity and continuity, the festival brings together sons and daughters of the community from across Nigeria and beyond, fostering stronger family and communal bonds.

Traditionally, yam regarded as the “King of Crops” is celebrated as a measure of wealth, strength, and productivity. Organizers note that the event also promotes modern farming practices, stimulates local trade, and supports cultural tourism.

Speaking ahead of the celebration, Eze Kingsley Chukwunyere Ogundu (JP), Oyo VIII, said the festival continues to preserve the values and traditions that define the Azumini Isiokpo people.

“The New Yam Festival is a time of thanksgiving, reflection, and renewal. It unites our people and strengthens our identity,” he stated.

This year’s celebration is expected to attract guests, cultural groups, and dignitaries from across the Niger Delta and beyond.
