NES Breaks New Ground at RSU: 176 Inducted, Public Lecture Makes History

The Department of Economics, Rivers State University (RSU), in partnership with the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, hosted its maiden Departmental Public Lecture and Induction Ceremony at the University’s Business School DBA Hall (CCE Building).

Delivering the welcome address, Prof. Dennis B. Ewubare, Head of department of Economics and Secretary General of NES Rivers state chapter and Host of the event, described the occasion as a milestone in the history of the Faculty of Social Sciences, RSU.

He noted that the lecture provided a platform to deepen understanding of two crucial tools in managing the Nigerian economy—fiscal and monetary policies—while also inducting new members into the society for the very first time at the university.

“To new inductees, you are not merely joining a society; you are joining a vanguard of thinkers and problem-solvers.

As members, you are expected to uphold the standards of excellence and ethics that define our profession.” – Prof. Ewubare stated.

The lecture, themed “Understanding the Workings of Fiscal and Monetary Policies,” was delivered by Prof. Okechukwu Onuchuku, Acting Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University.

Prof. Onuchuku emphasized that the ultimate aim of fiscal and monetary stabilization is equitable income distribution. He outlined strategies to improve Nigeria’s policy mix, including:

– Stronger government-led development planning,

– Reduced dependence on market forces,

– Value addition in productive sectors,

– Investment in education and human -capital development,

– Promotion of local content,

– Reliable electricity supply, and

– Enhanced security.

He stressed that fiscal policy remains a vital instrument for tackling unemployment in the Nigerian system.

Representing the Vice Chancellor of RSU, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, Prof Victor Akujuru, commended the Department of Economics and NES for organizing what he described as a groundbreaking initiative, pledging continued support for similar academic and professional engagements.

The administration of the induction oath was conducted virtually by Dr. Baba Yusuf Musa, National President of NES and Director General of the West African Institute of Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM).

Dr. Musa charged the inductees to view membership as “a serious commitment to service.”

111 inductees for associate membership and 65 for full membership, totaling to 176.

The event attracted distinguished academics, policymakers, students, and economic stakeholders at a time when Nigeria grapples with complex fiscal and monetary challenges.

The hybrid gathering not only broadened participants’ understanding of Nigeria’s economic framework but also strengthened ties between academia and national policy. In addition, 176 new Associate and Full Members of NES were inducted, receiving certificates of membership.

Stakeholders hailed the ceremony as a “game-changer,” positioning it as a platform to prepare the next generation of economists to navigate Nigeria’s dynamic economic landscape.
