Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old breakout star of Netflix’s Adolescence, has made history as the youngest ever male winner at the Emmy Awards.
Born in Warrington, Cooper was just 14 when he filmed the hard-hitting four-part British mini-series. Adolescence explores the aftermath of a teenage girl’s stabbing and the arrest of a 13-year-old boy for her murder. Beyond its gripping storyline, the series gained acclaim for its unflinching look at social media–driven misogyny among teenage boys.
Playing the young suspect Jamie, Cooper delivered what critics hailed as an “astonishing” and “truly remarkable performance.” Casting director Shaheen Baig revealed she was struck by his natural screen presence, recalling his audition as “smart, authentic, and effortless.”
Though Cooper once dreamed of becoming a footballer, he began weekly acting classes in Didsbury, Manchester, at age 10. Until Adolescence, he had no TV or film credits to his name.
Accepting his Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Cooper reflected on his journey:
“I was nothing about three years ago, and now I’m here. Step out of your comfort zone a little—who cares if you get embarrassed?”
With this historic win, Owen Cooper cements his place as one of Britain’s brightest rising stars.
