Photos: Three-day Retreat for the Ministry of Regional Development and the Regional Development Agencies

The opening of the three-day retreat for the Ministry of Regional Development and the Regional Development Agencies, which commenced on Thursday, April 15, at Uwaifo Hall, GRA, Benin City, Edo State, lived up to its billing.The quality of presentations delivered at the event far exceeded expectations.

The retreat, themed “Generating Fresh Ideas to Unlock the Region,” witnessed robust participation from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), led by the Chairman of its Governing Board, Mr Chiedu Ebie, alongside six other regional development agencies. Discussions critically examined Nigeria’s experience in regional development, highlighting successes, challenges, and lessons drawn from other countries advancing effective regional development strategies.

Deliberations also focused on the principles of corporate governance in the public service, including the roles and responsibilities of Boards and Management, as well as issues of accountability and transparency.

The Code of Conduct for Public Officers featured prominently, with emphasis on conflict of interest, abuse of office, and asset declaration.

Additionally, participants explored the institutional framework guiding appointments, promotions, and disciplinary procedures within the public service.

In his presentation, the Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, who also serves as the Supervising Minister for the Regional Development Agencies, explained that the establishment of the development commissions by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reflects a strong institutional commitment to coordinated and targeted regional transformation through the revitalization of critical infrastructure.

He noted that the creation of the Regional Development Commissions was driven by the recognition that Nigeria’s prosperity must be broad-based—addressing the unique developmental challenges of each region while harnessing their distinct potentials.

The Minister further urged the commissions to close ranks, foster synergy with the Ministry, and align their vision with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
