Posthumous Celebration of Albert Tombari Badey (CON)

It was a solemn and reflective posthumous celebration of a thoroughbred public servant who, in his own right, rose through the ranks to the highest echelons of government.

Late Albert Tombari Badey (CON) lived a life that significantly impacted his community and the Ogoni people at large. His life, though tragically cut short, remains a testament to service, humility, and dedication.

The event commenced with a Service of Songs officiated by the Methodist Church of Nigeria. The service featured hymn renditions, musical tributes, and reflections in honour of the deceased. The Bible reading was taken from the Book of Isaiah 57:1–3 and was delivered by the Head of Service, Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi Brown.

In his homily titled “Building on a Righteous Foundation,” the officiating minister, Most Rev. Dr. Effiong A. Esedeke, emphasized that Albert Badey lived a life worthy of emulation. He encouraged attendees particularly the Ogoni people to embrace forgiveness and build on goodwill, values that defined Badey’s life.

There were moving musical performances by the Gokana Central Choir and the Riv-Harmonious Ensemble, alongside a compelling biographical presentation that highlighted the life and legacy of the late statesman. Prayers were also offered for the Badey family.

The event transitioned into an inaugural lecture and the unveiling of the Albert Badey Centre for Development (ABCD). The Chairman of the occasion and former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Gabriel Toby, eulogized Badey as an exemplary leader who consistently dedicated himself to the service of humanity. He described his passing as a profound loss to the state but noted that comfort could be found in the impactful life he lived.

Delivering the inaugural lecture, Dr. Emmanuel Denenu described Badey as a dependable “go-to” figure—always ready to offer guidance and encouragement. In unveiling the centre, Ibelema Greene noted that ABCD is committed to building individuals one at a time, anchored on the belief in the transformative power of one person.

The event concluded with a fundraising luncheon in support of the centre, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by the Badey family.

Albert Tombari Badey served the Rivers State Government with distinction. Beginning his career in 1969 with the Rehabilitation Commission, he later returned to Port Harcourt after the Civil War. He served as Permanent Secretary across various ministries from 1972 to 1982, Commissioner for Information from 1985 to 1987, and subsequently as Secretary to the Rivers State Military Government and Head of Service from 1987 until 1992, under three military administrations.
