Sanwo-Olu Orders Probe Into Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered an investigation into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi, son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following allegations of medical negligence against Euracare Multispecialist Hospital, Victoria Island.
The directive, issued through the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), followed Ms Adichie’s public account detailing alleged serious medical lapses during a procedure carried out at the hospital on January 6, 2026. The Governor’s Special Adviser on Health, Kemi Ogunyemi, said HEFAMAA has already begun a comprehensive, independent, and transparent inquiry, including a visit to the facility involved.
According to the Lagos State Government, the investigation will examine compliance with clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the roles of all parties involved. HEFAMAA will collaborate with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other relevant regulatory bodies, with findings to be made public in the interest of transparency and accountability.
The state government commiserated with Ms Adichie and her family, reaffirming its zero tolerance for medical negligence and assuring residents that any individual or institution found culpable will face the full weight of the law. Euracare Hospital, however, has stated that the child was referred to its facility for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment at two paediatric centres.
