Tinubu gives marching orders: Crash food prices now!

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a firm directive to a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to urgently bring down food prices across Nigeria.

This was revealed by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, during a one-day capacity-building workshop organised by the Senate Press Corps in Abuja.

Abdullahi stated that the government was focusing on ensuring the safe and efficient movement of agricultural produce across the country to tackle high transportation costs—one of the key drivers of rising food prices.

“The President has given a marching order to the FEC committee already working on this issue,” Abdullahi said.

“We’re promoting safe passage for agricultural goods through key routes to lower the cost at the point of delivery.”

The Minister linked this directive to Tinubu’s broader vision of food sovereignty, which aims to ensure food is available, affordable, accessible, and nutritious for all Nigerians.

Abdullahi also hinted at two upcoming government initiatives. He said the Farmer Soil Health Scheme would be launched soon. He also said that there would be a major cooperative reform and revamp programme, to strengthen local cooperatives for better resource mobilisation and community development.

“President Tinubu sees cooperatives as powerful tools to boost livelihoods and economic activities. We’re reforming and revitalizing that sector,” the minister added.

Other key speakers at the workshop focused on challenges in parliamentary reporting included Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Senator Ita Enang, and NILDS Director General Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman.
