Ukraine May Limit Mobile Internet To Counter Russian Drone Strikes.

Ukraine may restrict mobile internet speeds during Russian drone attacks to block enemy drones from coordinating strikes.

Ukraine could intentionally restrict the quality of mobile communications during Russian drone attacks in an effort to disrupt enemy operations, the country’s Chief of the General Staff, Andriy Hnatov, has said.

Speaking to the Ukrainian video channel Novyny Live on Sunday, Hnatov explained that the move would not amount to a total disruption of services but rather a temporary reduction in network speed. “This is not a disruption of mobile communications, but rather a restriction on the qua tolity of communications in certain areas, like a restriction on 4G and 5G communication,” he said.

According to Hnatov, the aim is to prevent Russian drones from using Ukraine’s mobile networks to transmit live images or co-ordinate strikes. “So that the modems they use on their unmanned aerial vehicles cannot access the internet of our communications operators,” he added.

Local media reports suggest that limiting high-speed internet could hinder drones fitted with cameras, which typically rely on 4G connectivity to function effectively.

The strategy comes as Russia intensifies its aerial assaults more than three years into the war. Moscow has significantly increased the number of drones deployed in recent months, upgrading their technology to maximise damage to strategic targets and infrastructure.

Ukraine’s consideration of this tactic mirrors Russia’s own wartime approach. Moscow has frequently ordered mobile internet shutdowns in an effort to block Ukrainian drones from operating effectively.
