Port Harcourt Hosts Thrilling Polo Tournament Finale

The weeklong Port Harcourt Polo Tournament ended on a high note at the Port Harcourt Polo Club, with thrilling final matches, live music performances, and the presentation of awards to outstanding teams and players.

The annual tournament, which traditionally opens Nigeria’s polo season, attracted teams from within and outside the country, underscoring its growing international profile. Participating teams included Elshcon, Risevest, Akah-Ibah, Bob Track, Cassectric, Gilaso Ismanaf, and FB9 Indian Warriors. The event drew elite players, sports enthusiasts, dignitaries, and patrons of the sport in a celebration of skill, sportsmanship, and camaraderie.

Tagged “United by the Game,” the tournament highlighted polo’s ability to bridge divides and foster unity among participants from diverse backgrounds. Spectators were treated to fast-paced, high-quality matches throughout the week, marked by tactical brilliance, teamwork, and excellent horsemanship.

Players competed for major trophies, including the Prof. T.J.T. PrinceWill Cup, T.Y. Danjuma Cup, Governor’s Cup, and the Rowland Cookey-Gam Memorial Cup. In an interview, the President of the Port Harcourt Polo Club said this year’s edition was organised in commemoration of the late Arc. Rowland Cookey-Gam, a respected member of the club who passed away 20 years ago.

He also disclosed plans to encourage youth participation in the sport, noting that polo is open to everyone through various membership categories. According to him, the tournament has helped project Rivers State positively while also boosting the state’s economy.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Governor of Rivers State Sir Siminalaye Fubara commended the organisers for a successful event and pledged continued support for the Polo Club. He assured participants and visitors that the state remains peaceful, secure, and open for business.

Beyond the matches, the tournament featured vibrant social activities, live entertainment, and networking opportunities. The event concluded with the presentation of trophies and special awards in recognition of excellence and fair play.

The Port Harcourt Polo Tournament once again affirmed its status as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting and social events, setting the pace for the polo season in the country.
