In an effort to restore the Old City of Port Harcourt to its former glory, the Rivers State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Sir Dr. Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, has inaugurated a committee tasked with overseeing the area’s development.
The committee, officially named the Committee to Revamp Old Port Harcourt City Township and chaired by TPL. Dr. Tonte Davies FNITP, aims to enhance traffic flow and improve the transportation of goods and services within and around the historic city. During a recent visit to Shorelink Oil and Gas, the committee addressed the pressing issue of illegal truck parking along major roads in Rivers State, a longstanding problem contributing to traffic congestion and public inconvenience.
The committee includes prominent individuals such as Hon. Evans Bipi, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, and Hon. Benibo Anabraba, Commissioner for Housing. Other members include the Permanent Secretaries for Lands, Urban Development, Commerce, and Transport, alongside representatives from the Office of the Surveyor General, Nigeria Ports Authority, Railways Cooperation, and Ibeto. Also part of the committee are the GMD of Rainbow Heritage, proponents from Exodon Consultants, and community representatives from Rebisi Kingdom and Okrika.
Various stakeholders, including organizations and community leaders, have expressed support for the initiative, pledging to collaborate with the government to ensure its success. The committee’s recent inspection covered critical locations, including the Port Harcourt Ring Road, Mini-Ntawagbor Creek, and reclaimed land behind the Heart of the Sick Hospital.
This revitalization effort marks a significant stride towards transforming Old Port Harcourt City, addressing long-standing challenges, and improving the quality of life for its residents.
