In a grand ceremony, Rotarian Yvonne Iwo Brown was officially installed as the 8th President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan, known as The CEO’s Club, marking the beginning of the 2024-2025 Rotary year.
Alongside her, the induction of her dedicated Board of Directors took place, promising a year of impactful service and leadership.
The event sparkled with inspiration as Professor Nosakhare Bazuaye (RTN) a distinguished Rotarian, a medical doctor from Benin, Professor Bazuaye is on record as the first doctor to perform a successful stem cell transplant in Nigeria, in 2011, at the University of Benin’s Teaching Hospital (UBTH). The patient was a five-year-old, Ndik Mathew.
Prof. Bazuaye shared his groundbreaking work in conducting 26 successful stem cell transplants for sickle cell patients. With expertise and passion, he enlightened the audience on the intricacies of his field, detailing the challenges and triumphs of establishing a cutting-edge stem cell transfer center in Nigeria. The doctor also revealed the significant financial commitment required for these life-saving operations, emphasizing the costs ranging from 20 million to 23 million, underscoring the dedication and resources essential for advancing medical care in the community.
As the evening unfolded, the spirit of generosity flourished as funds were raised for the club’s upcoming community service project. Members and guests alike embraced the opportunity to contribute to the noble cause, showcasing their commitment to supporting initiatives that make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
