Court declares 25 Rivers Assembly seats vacant

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has granted an order of interlocutory injunction restraining Martin Amaewhule, the embattled speaker, and his associates from parading and holding out themselves as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The restraining order in the suit No: PHC/1512/Cs/2024, granted in the court presided over by Justice Charles N, Wali, is also barring them from meeting or sitting at the Auditorium of the House of Assembly Quarters that is located at Off Port Harcourt -Aba Expressway in Port Harcourt.

With the order, Amaewhule and his associates are also restrained from using any other place whatsoever to purportedly carry out legislative
business of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The order acknowledged that their their legislative seats had already been declared vacant with effect from 13th December, 2023, and it will remain so pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

Also, an order of Interlocutory Injunction was made to restrain the 26 to 28 defendants from dealing with, interfacing, accepting any resolutions, bills and, or howsoever interacting with them in whatever purported capacities as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The case has been adjoined to 1st June 2024 for mention.
