“Okay Sis, I’m off to the party” Kike said heading for the door, “ I’ll be back tomorrow morning as usual” she said winking as she slammed the door behind her. All Toke could do was shake her head as she watched her leave the room at midnight.Toke and Kike were best friends, they had known each other since high school and they had become more like sisters to each other. People often wondered how two people so different in character could be so close to each other.
Toke was naïve, shy and laidback, she preferred to sit at home reading a book rather than go out to have fun. Kike on the other hand was the life of the party, she always had an event to attend every other day and as such seemed to get a lot more attention from men who she used and tossed around at will, this never bothered Toke as she had no interest in men, she had ignored several pleas from Kike asking her to date one of the few suitors that had come her way, even if it was just for financial benefits, she could not imagine herself falling for any man, to her, it was a total waste of time.
One Friday afternoon after lectures, Toke was walking back from the library when a silver Mercedes SUV pulled up beside her, “hope it’s not one of these stupid Alhajis looking for babes to pick up for the night ” she thought frowning her face, the tinted window slowly rolled down to reveal a handsome young man in his mid-thirties looking straight at her with a smile that could melt the coldest of hearts. “hello” he called out to Toke. “good afternoon” she replied looking over her shoulder to be sure he was indeed talking to her, her eyes met with his and for the first time ever, her heart skipped a beat .
“I’m trying to find my way to the union building” he replied “can you help me out?” “Sure, why not?” Toke replied “It’s not too far from here, just go straight down to the end of the road and turn to your right, it would be the last building on the left side of the road.” “Thanks so much for your help, I’ll be on my way now” he replied still smiling “by the way, that’s a nice dress you’re wearing” “Thanks for the compliment” Toke said blushing and smiling sheepishly like an excited kindergarten child, she could not help but notice how handsome the stranger was. For the first time in her life she felt attracted to a man. She stood there daydreaming and wishing he had asked for her number as he drove off.
Every day she would walk the same route back home, hoping she would somehow bump into him again.Not a single day passed without her thinking about this handsome stranger she had met by chance, worse still she had no clue what his name was so she couldn’t find him on facebook or anywhere else for that matter. “I think I’m in love” she told Kike one morning while they were tidying up their apartment.
“what did you just say?” Kike jumped up dropping the broom she was holding and staring at her friend in disbelief. “I don’t know Kike, I know it might sound crazy but I’m in love with someone I met some months back” she replied.
“It’s a lie, did I just hear the word love from my friends mouth?” Kike said still staring at her friend in disbelief “how come you never mentioned this before now?”
“Well, that is not even the issue” she said dragging her friend to the bed to sit. “Oya gist me” she said patting the space beside her on the bed for her friend to sit, “what’s his name? how did you guys meet? Why hasn’t he come to visit yet?”
“I’ve only met him once” Toke started to explain avoiding Kike’s stare “he stopped me to ask for directions on my way home one day and he drove off afterwards, I haven’t seen him since then” “So you mean you finally met someone you liked and you let him go just like that?” Kike said with her hands on her waist.
“That’s not important now, Kike, all that matters now is that I need to find this guy and you have to help me” Toke pleaded, I know we’ve only met once and I don’t even know his name but I’m sure he’s the one.” She continued trying to convince Kike. “you know what?” Kike replied, “If I were you, I’d just forget this guy, he’s never going to come back?” “You don’t know that for sure” Toke replied not wanting to be discouraged by her friend’s words “Well my dear, Life is not a movie, sometimes you have to face reality” Kike said patting her on the back. Right there and then, Toke made a silent promise to herself not to give up on finding her handsome stranger.
Few months went by and he still didn’t return, Toke had already lost hope on ever meeting him again then one afternoon after a long day of lectures, Toke returned to her apartment feeling really tired “I really hope I’ll be able to catch some sleep before Kike returns with her usual dose of daily gist” she thought to herself as she opened the door “that’s strange” she thought, “the door isn’t locked, I guess Kike must’ve forgotten to lock the door before leaving this morning” she said to herself as she walked in, kicking off her shoes, she spotted a male figure standing and looking out of the window at the end of the hallway and screamed, dropping her books on the floor, she suddenly felt her feet go numb and she couldn’t get herself to move anymore as the man began to walk towards her……..
