Degema Local Government Area and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Degema Branch have joined forces to establish a Human Rights Desk aimed at providing legal aid to local residents, particularly women and youth who may face financial constraints.
Degema Local Government Council Chairman, Dr. Agiriye Monima Harry, announced this during a courtesy visit by the NBA Degema Branch to the Council Secretariat, on Friday, November 29th.
Harry expressed his appreciation for the lawyers’ offer of pro bono services and pledged the Council’s support for the upcoming law week celebration. He also committed to assisting in the completion of the abandoned NBA Secretariat in Degema.
The Chairman expressed concern over the dilapidated state of the Degema Division of the High Court and urged the lawyers to engage relevant authorities to expedite its relocation from Buguma City in Asari-Toru LGA, to its original location in Degema.
Abiye A. Abo, who led the lawyers’ delegation, thanked the Chairman for appointing two of their members, Bar. Mrs. Nelly Johnbull and Bar. Muyiwa Abiodun, as Secretary to Council and Special Adviser on Legal respectively.
He explained that the visit was part of a routine initiative to foster relationships with Asari Toru, Akuku-Toru and Degema local government chairmen within the NBA Degema Branch’s jurisdiction.
Abo informed the Chairman about the upcoming Human Rights Day on December 10th and the Law Week, which will conclude with a dinner on December 13th.
In commemoration of this year’s Human Rights Day, instead of organising traditional rallies, the lawyers proposed establishing a Human Rights Desk at the Council Secretariat, a proposal that was promptly approved by the Chairman.
Other members of the delegation included Nimi Isokariari (Vice Chairman), Dr. Prince I. Azubuike (Secretary), Sarah Akomaje (Treasurer), Prince Princewill Godwill (Financial Secretary), and Dikio N. Donpedro (Publicity Secretary).
