Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State says his administration will reconstruct the Creek Road Market.
The market is located in the Old township axis of Port Harcourt of Rivers State.
Governor Fubara visited the market and walked round a section of the trading posts on Tuesday.
He was greeted by cheering traders who expressed joy that his visit will bring succour to them.
Governor Fubara frowned at the unorganised and reckless display of wares on the entire stretch of Creek Road and some of the adjoining streets by the traders.
He spoke and said: “We are here to inspect for ourselves the position of things in Port Harcourt Township.
“You are aware that some weeks ago, a committee was inaugurated for the redevelopment of Port Harcourt Township.
“Since then, I have been getting a lot of calls from the old boys of Port Harcourt Township that if you have to do anything, first of all, we need to sort out the issue of market.
“We are aware of when the Creek Road was reconstructed that the market was relocated to No 3 Field and it affected the face of the Town.
“So, I came here myself with the Commissioner for Housing, the Commissioner for Urban, the Chairman for the Committee for the Reurbanization Port Harcourt Township, the SSG to see for ourself what we can do immediately.
“I can say here that, the first thing we are going to do immediately before we start the cleaning and the redesigning of Port Harcourt Township, is to make sure that we give them a befitting market so that we can immediately move those people out of those residential areas so we can commence beautifying the town areas.
“I can tell you that I feel very sad that our people are going through this in the course of development.
“I assure them, government is continuum, that we do everything to make sure that we settle them in an appropriate and well befitting market.”
Governor Fubara was accompanied the Secretary to Rivers State Government(SSG),Dr. Tammy Danagogo; the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Benebo George; the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi and the Chairman of the Committee to Redevelop the old Port Harcourt City Centre, adjoining lands and waterfronts, Dr Tonte Davies.
