Governor Godwin of Edo State has exercised his prerogative of mercy to grant clemency to ten inmates nearing the end of their sentences, offering them a second chance at a fresh start.
The decision was announced by Hon. Justice P.O. Isibor (Rtd), Chairman of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. Justice Isibor revealed that the council had received a request from the Benin Correctional Service, submitted on November 5, 2024, by the Controller of the Correctional Centre. The request highlighted the inmates’ impending sentence completion and the potential positive impact of early release.
“The Council convened to carefully review the applications and unanimously made appropriate recommendations,” Justice Isibor explained. “We respectfully invited Mr. Governor to consider and approve these recommendations.”
Following the council’s recommendation, Governor Obaseki approved the release of the ten inmates. The beneficiaries of the clemency include Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah.
This compassionate gesture not only marks a new beginning for these individuals but also reflects Governor Obaseki’s commitment to rehabilitation and social reintegration.
