Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has inaugurated the construction of the New Port City in Eleme, marking a deliberate approach to urban development that extends beyond the state capital, Port Harcourt. This initiative, launched during a groundbreaking ceremony on represents a comprehensive strategy to build new, sustainable cities across the state.
The Governor Sir Siminalaye Fubara, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy W. Danagogo, described the New Port City as a visionary smart city that will set new standards for urban living in the region. He also revealed that similar projects are in the pipeline for the Eleme axis and that a legislative amendment is underway to the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority (GPHCDA )Act, ensuring a solid legal framework for the state’s new cities initiative.
Also, the leader of the Simplified movement in Eleme and former ambassador to the Netherlands Amb. Oji Ngofa, highlighted the project as a critical development milestone for Eleme, addressing long-standing gaps in infrastructure and human capacity while fostering overall regional growth.
Dr. Tonte Davis, Acting Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, underscored the importance of the New Port City, which will be developed by Rainbow Heritage Group Limited. He detailed the city’s integrated features, including advanced port infrastructure, diverse residential and commercial districts, commercial agriculture, small and medium-scale industries, and essential social amenities. The city will also boast a 24-hour independent power supply, comprehensive road networks with bicycle and pedestrian paths, as well as state-of-the-art water, waste, and sewage treatment facilities, all designed to create a balanced and sustainable urban environment.
The Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority GPHCDA span across eight Local government Areas in Rivers State and the new Port City represents the one if the pillar of the Greater Port Harcourt City master plan, following the development of the old Port Harcourt city and the airport axis.
