“Welcome home darling” Rita greeted her husband giving him a peck on the lips as he handed her his jacket and brief case, “how was work today?” She asked, “Stressful as usual” Jerry replied, “what’s for dinner?” “Yam porridge, one of your favourites” she said,” have a seat and let me serve it for you”
“I’ll be travelling to China next week” Jerry announced when they were both seated at the table, “again?” Rita questioned dropping her fork “you just got back last week” “I know,” Jerry replied, “But I have to go,it’s important for my business” he explained.
Jerry and Rita had been married for close to ten years, he was a businessman who travelled at every given opportunity, he was hardly ever in the country. Rita on the other hand was a housewife, Jerry never allowed her to get a job, he preferred she stayed home to take good care of their two children.
Rita felt lonely and empty most times, Jerry was never really there when she needed someone to talk to and when he finally came back he was always too tired to talk or too busy with work. She had considered getting a divorce a few times when the pressure got much but decided against it for the sake of her children.
One day when Jerry travelled, it was her children’s open day at school, her son’s class teacher had sent specially for his parents to discuss his poor performance at school, he noticed her husband was absent and asked why, at that moment she burst into uncontrollable tears embarrassing the teacher, he tried his best to console her and offered to check on her much later to make sure she was doing okay so they exchanged contact details.
Ever since that day, Mr Seni the school teacher would call to check on her once in a while till once in a while became once a week and once a week became everyday, of course by then she was already returning his calls, it got so bad that she couldn’t do a day without hearing from him. Eventually they went on a couple of dates together, she would drop the children at her mother’s place so they could spend quality time alone.
One day,he came over to the house to visit, it was at about 4pm and the children were having their siesta, they sat in the living room watching a movie when suddenly he leaned forward to kiss her, she tried to resist but could not find the strength, she eventually started to kiss him back, they were both so deeply engrossed that they didn’t notice her six year old son Tomi walk into the living room room, he stood there confused for a few seconds before finally screaming “Mummy why are you kissing Mr Seni?”, startled by the sound of his voice, they both jumped apart and turned to see a confused and angry little Tomi standing behind them.
