The Ijaw Women Connect (IWC), a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women and fostering development in Ijaw communities, marked its 10th anniversary at Wellington Hotel in Effurun, Delta State on November 1st 2024.
The celebration, themed “Re-imagining the Ijaw Struggle and the Quest for Gender Inclusion in Strengthening Regional Progress,” gathered dignitaries, women leaders, and stakeholders to reflect on a decade of impact and progress.
Engr. Charles Ebiredei Ambaowei, the keynote speaker, underscored the vital role of women in driving regional advancement, highlighting that sustainable development depends on gender inclusion. IWC founder and pioneer president, Comrade (Mrs.) Rosemary Aken John-Oduone, reaffirmed the organization’s mission to elevate women’s voices within the Niger Delta and the broader Ijaw cause.
The event also featured an awards ceremony honoring individuals for their contributions to women’s empowerment and regional development. Cultural performances celebrating Ijaw heritage enriched the gathering. Distinguished guests included Professor Benjamin Ogele Okaba, President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC); His Royal Highness Barr. Godspower Tam Oporoma, Honorable Commissioner for Ijaw National Affairs, Bayelsa State; Dr. Shedrack Agediga, former Executive Director of DESOPADEC; and High Chief (Dr.) Nengi James, OON, the first President of the Ijaw National Congress, along with other leaders dedicated to gender equality and community progress.
