Port Harcourt Boat Club Seeks Fubara’s Intervention To Save Facility.

Rivers State

The Port Harcourt Boat Club has made an urgent appeal to Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara for intervention to prevent its facility from deteriorating due to continuous flooding from the Isaka River.

Speaking in an interview with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt, Vice Commodore Professor Miebaka Tamunomiebi highlighted the immediate need to desilt and reclaim portions of the club’s waterfront, which are at risk of sinking. Established in 1947 by Port Harcourt’s investment community, the club’s infrastructure now requires significant renovation and upgrades to meet current standards.

Tamunomiebi expressed that while the club is making efforts to maintain and improve its facilities, the scale of work required is beyond their capacity. “We have reached out to the government, relevant ministries, and commissioners, who have visited and seen the situation firsthand,” he said. “We’ve continuously appealed for government support to enhance the quality of this historic site.”

He added that long-time members have been maintaining the club’s structures, but emphasized the necessity for major upgrades, especially in elevating and desilting the waterfront area. “The waterfront is our priority. Every day, we face the risk of it eroding further. We’re asking the state government to assist in desilting and reclaiming part of the waterfront to secure the club’s future.”
