Mrs. Tonye Briggs Oniyide, Immediate past Rivers State Commissioner for Culture & Tourism, Rivers State was born in the mid-1970s to the Abel Briggs Family in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state.
She is a constructive and accessible manager of men and resources, a philanthropist and a grass-root politician.
A graduate of Bio-Chemistry from the prestigious University of Port Harcourt, Mrs. Tonye Briggs Oniyide has an exceptional flair for Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Development in Africa hence her listing in 2018 as one of the top Ten African Tourism Personalities awarded by African Travels Magazine.
As a scientist turned entrepreneur and administrator, this spectacular and industrious African Woman has since 2003 served in various State and National capacities, some of which are.:-
Special Assistant to Former Governor Peter Odili on Culture and Tourism Rivers state – (2003)
Special Adviser to former Governor Celestine Omehia on Youth and Employment – (2007)
Former Commissioner, Representing Rivers State in the Federal Character Commission – (2013 – 2015).
Former Commissioner of Culture and Tourism Rivers State under, His Excellency Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (2015-2019).
Going by her outstanding performance, she was reappointed as Commissioner of Culture and Tourism (2020-2023).
State Coordinator; Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), for the Wife of the Governor of Rivers State.
She is a widow to late Brigadier General Samuel Oniyide (rtd.) and blessed with a daughter, Adeola Emmanuella Oniyide and three step children and Grand Children.
As a shining star that cannot be hidden, Mrs Oniyide is a recipient of several awards, just to mention a few;
Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State (DSSRS), by His Excellency Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (2023).
Outstanding Commissioner of the year 2018, Awarded by the Garden City Advancement Awards (A People’s choice Awards).
Woman of Merit Gold Awards, given by the People State and Resources (PSR) Magazine.
The Most Elegant Commissioner of the year 2017, given by Niger Delta Pentecostal Pageant.
African Woman of the Year Award 2020, given by African Women in Leadership Organization.
A recipient of Ambassador of the Girl Child Award, given by ACMGS Old Girls Association.
Mrs. Oniyide is a fellow of the West African Society for Communication and Administration (WASCA). She is also a recipient of several other awards.
Mrs Tonye Briggs Oniyide is a lover of good music, has a penchant for learning new and interesting things as well as meeting nice people.
