Rivers State Comes Alive with Cultural and Tourism Activities During Yuletide
The yuletide season transformed Rivers State into a hub of culture, colour, and celebration as communities across the state rolled out an array of festivals, carnivals, and cultural displays that attracted residents, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from within and outside the state.
From the riverine islands of Bonny, Bakana, Andoni, Tombia, Opobo, and Okrika to major mainland towns such as Buguma, Isiokpo, and Ahoada, the atmosphere was charged with excitement as age-long traditions blended seamlessly with modern entertainment to create unforgettable experiences.
In the riverine communities of Tombia, Bonny, and Opobo, the waterways came alive with spectacular boat regattas, where various groups and compounds showcased strength, coordination, and maritime heritage. These displays were complemented by the energetic Iria dances, whose rhythmic drumbeats, colourful costumes, and graceful movements reflected the cultural depth of the people. A major highlight in Bonny was the breathtaking appearance of the ancient Nwaotam masquerade, a revered symbol of tradition that captivated spectators with its artistry and cultural symbolism.
In Bakana, the celebration took a glamorous turn with the hosting of a beauty pageantry that crowned Miss Bakana, aimed at promoting cultural pride, youth empowerment, and tourism. The festivities also featured a lively Blue Jeans Carnival and an energetic street walk, drawing large crowds and adding a contemporary flavour to the cultural showcase.
On the mainland, Isiokpo played host to a colourful bicycle carnival, a creative display that narrated the community’s history, way of life, and evolving cultural identity through decorated bicycles and themed costumes. The carnival provided both entertainment and cultural education, especially for younger generations.
Meanwhile, Buguma became a centre of musical excitement as thousands gathered to enjoy electrifying performances by popular artistes including Wizard Chan, Timaya, and a host of other entertainers. The music fiesta created a festive atmosphere that lasted well into the night, further boosting local businesses and hospitality services.
The yuletide celebrations were not limited to entertainment alone, as communities also used the period to promote unity, peace, and economic activities. Hotels, resorts, transport services, and local traders recorded increased patronage, underscoring the economic benefits of cultural tourism.
Rivers State has continued to stand out as a major tourism destination in Nigeria, and the yuletide festivities once again lived up to expectations. The season reinforced the state’s rich cultural heritage, strengthened communal bonds, and reaffirmed Rivers State’s position as a vibrant hub for culture, tourism, and entertainment.
