Rotary District 9141 Welcomes International President-Elect Olayinka Hakeem Babalola

The Rotary Club, District 9141, was thrown into jubilation as members celebrated and welcomed the Rotary International President-Elect, Rtn. Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, at the Rotary Centre, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt.

The celebration began at the Protocol Lounge of the Port Harcourt International Airport, where an excited crowd and cultural dance troupes gathered to receive their “homeboy,” the newly elected President-Elect.

At the Rotary Centre, Trans-Amadi, Babalola performed his first symbolic duty by planting a tree, a gesture signifying new beginnings, growth, and sustainable progress. The ceremony was witnessed by presidents of various Rotary clubs across the district.

Formally opening the program, District Governor Mr. Tony expressed pride and delight at the historic moment:

“It gives me great joy to stand before you to welcome our brand new Rotary International President-Elect. I was privileged to be with him in Lagos when the news broke. I always believed he would one day become our President before 2028, but I never imagined it would happen in my year as Governor.”

Adding his voice, Rotary International Director from Uganda, Mr. Emmanuel Umaga, described Babalola’s election as a milestone for Africa and expressed confidence that he would be one of the best RI Presidents. He called on members to rally around him with their support.

In his remarks, President-Elect Babalola thanked members of District 9141 for their overwhelming support and urged them to remain focused on the tasks ahead, stressing that Rotary’s impact rests on collective commitment to service.

About Olayinka Hakeem Babalola.

* Began his Rotary career as a Rotaractor in 1988, later joining the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi in 1994.

* Served as District Governor (2011–2012).

* Rose to become RI Vice President (2019–2020) and RI Board Member (2018–2020).

* Chaired global initiatives including the End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign Committee (2017–2023).

* Currently serves as an adviser to the Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee.

His election marks a historic milestone, making him only the second African and Nigerian to ever hold the position of Rotary International President, following Jonathan B. Majiyagbe (2003–2004). He will officially assume office for the 2026–2027 Rotary year the, beginning on July 1,2026.
