RSG Charges Journalists to Promote Government Programmes and Strengthen Government-Citizens Engagement
The Rivers State Government has urged journalists to intensify the reportage of its programmes, projects, and achievements in order to enhance public awareness and strengthen the relationship between the government and citizens.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, gave the charge during a courtesy visit by the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by the Chairman, Mr. Paul Bazia-Nsaneh, in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Anabraba emphasized that as the fourth estate of the realm, journalists are expected to provide platforms for constructive criticism and act as watchdogs of society. He noted that public opinion expressed through the media helps government understand citizens’ perceptions while promoting awareness on policies and initiatives.
“As government, we see you as partners in conveying our activities to the people,” he said. He encouraged journalists to continue publicising key governance issues and promote civic participation, including civil rights advocacy, voter registration, and campaigns against gender-based violence, while maintaining balanced and morally responsible reporting.
In response, NUJ Chairman, Mr. Bazia-Nsaneh, appreciated the state government for its engagement and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to development-centred communication. He stated that the union is focused on projecting Rivers State positively and highlighting opportunities that can attract investors, adding that strategic projects have been outlined to support this effort.
