Wike Denies Rift With Military, Vows Crackdown on Abuja Land Grabbers

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed reports that a land dispute in Abuja caused a confrontation with the Nigerian military, insisting he maintains full respect for the armed forces.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Wike said the incident was exaggerated and involved a private individual, not the military institution. He explained that he intervened only after senior FCTA officials were assaulted while performing their duties.

“As Minister, I cannot stay silent when my team is attacked,” he said.

Wike stressed that his actions are guided by law, warning that no one is exempt from obeying legal directives.

“You must obey lawful orders, not illegal ones,” he said, adding that security personnel cannot hide behind instructions to justify wrongdoing.

He warned against intimidation and attempts to obstruct government authority, saying such actions encourage impunity. He also noted that any genuine issues involving the military are handled through the proper channels — the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs or the President.

Wike criticised media reports portraying him as targeting security agencies, urging journalists to verify information and avoid sensationalism.

Reaffirming his commitment to protecting Abuja’s master plan, he warned that those who convert agricultural plots into residential or commercial spaces without approval will face legal consequences.

“Government cannot operate in a lawless society. The law must be obeyed,” he said.

Wike said his firm stance reflects lawful governance, not high-handedness, adding that leadership requires difficult decisions.

“When your conscience is clear, you stand firm,” he stated.
