The Acute Kidney Injury hybrid workshop held in Port Harcourt Nigeria at the Conference Halls of Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board on the 19th of July, 2022 from 9am to 4pm. There were one hundred and thirty-one (131) participants from RSPHCMB, RSUTH, and UPTH, including doctors, nurses and community health workers. There were six facilitators (4 in-person and 2 virtual).
The aim of the workshop was to update health care workers in Rivers State on early detection and management of acute kidney injury (AKI) using point-of-care.
The objectives were to:
• Establish the practice of nephrology at the community level.
• Sensitize health care workers on the detection of AKI at community level using point-of-care testing.
• Educate health care providers on identification of high risk individuals, prevention measures for AKI, and proper management when detected.
Firstly, the aim of the workshop was highlight by the lead facilitator and International Society of Nephrology (ISN) liaison officer from the Salford Royal University Hospital Manchester UK, Professor Ibi Erekosima after the opening remarks by the Permanent Secretary Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board Dr Agiriye Harry on behalf of the Governor of Rivers State His Excellency Chief (Barrister) Nyesom Wike. An introductory session was given on AKI and its burden in Rivers State.
Participants were taught the management of AKI in special circumstances like pregnancy. There was also an update on evaluation and use of point-of-care creatinine for detection of AKI in Nigeria by the UK facilitators Dr Dimitris Poulikakos and Dr David Lewis in collaboration with the team from the renal department at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital led by Dr Pedro Emem Chioma.
Break-out sessions were organized to discuss management of AKI in the community setting and point-of-care testing. The next phase of the workshop will be a pilot study on community acquired AKI to be conducted at MPHC Ozuoba.
To Facilitate the workshop were 4 in person facilitators – Professor Ibi Erekosima Consultant Renal Physician and Lead Facilitator, Professor Rosemary Ogu Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Dr Pedro Emem-Chioma Consultant Renal Physician, Dr Prelador Fakrogha Consultant Renal Physician and 2 virtual facilitators – Dr Dimitris Poulikakos, Dr David Lewis.
