- On 4th January, 2025, during a boat ride around the island of Buguma along the Asari Toru New Calabar River, a disturbing oil blowout was observed. The incident, captured in both photographs and video by the President of Dr. Emi Membere-Otaji Foundation (DREMOF) has raised significant environmental concerns.
DREMOF, a non-profit organization which is committed in providing access to quality healthcare, excellent education and an eco-friendly environment for indigent members of the society, has long advocated for sustainable practices and this incident highlights the urgent need for action.
Regardless of the cause of the oil spill, it is clear that the responsibility to contain and clean up the spill rests entirely with the owners of the oil facility involved. This spill has already resulted in the immediate loss of income for local fishermen and posed a severe threat to marine life in the area.
However, beyond the immediate damages, the broader responsibility lies with all of us to protect and preserve our environment. It is crucial that we act swiftly to mitigate the impact of such incidents, ensuring the sustainability of our ecosystems for present and future generations.
This report serves as a reminder that we all must be vigilant in safeguarding the environment against such catastrophic events.
