AI enhances accurate patient diagnosis and treatment – Dr Membere-Otaji.

Adopting Artificial Intelligence, AI, in the learning and practice of medicine as well as other health-related sectors could significantly enhance the accuracy of patient diagnosis and treatment.

This perspective was shared by the National Deputy President of the Nigerian Association of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mines and Agriculture, Dr Emi Membere-Otaji, during the 8th Memorial Lecture of Professor Felix Oladejo Dosekun, organized by the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.

In his talk titled “Medical Curriculum and Artificial Intelligence: The Meeting Point and Path to Follow,” Dr Membere-Otaji noted that while AI is still in its early stages, it has the potential to improve various aspects of life by enabling faster and more effective solutions.

Dr Membere-Otaji highlighted that the Fourth Industrial Revolution has integrated AI into daily life, influencing nearly every field, noted that the convergence of AI with the medical curriculum is increasingly evident in the training of medical and dental professionals, as well as in clinical practice.

Dr Membere-Otaji, who is a medical practitioner, encouraged professional colleagues to continuously update their skills to remain relevant in a rapidly changing environment, cautioning that those who do not familiarize themselves with AI may risk being replaced in their roles.

The Provost of the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos, Professor Ademola Oremosu urged medical professionals to take full advantage of the vast opportunities that AI presents.

He mentioned that with the help of AI, a surgeon in Nigeria could potentially operate on a patient in the United States, in addition to participating in telemedicine and other related fields.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folashade Ogunsola, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Development Services, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, noted that AI technology is here to stay, emphasising that it will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of medical practices without replacing healthcare professionals.

Dr Emi Membere – Otaji served Rivers State as Commissioner of Health during the Dr Peter ODili administration with several landmark achievements ,he was the immediate Past President of the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, a trustee of Marine Equipment owner’s Association and a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management among other.

He is a founder of Dr. Emi Membere-Otaji Foundation and Chairman/CEO of Elshcon Group of companies with an interest in Oil & Gas, Shipping and Healthcare.

He was also a Recipient of the Heart of Gold Award at the just concluded EveAfrique Red Ball in Support of Causes.
