Clarification on the Distribution of Ambulances to Riverine Communities in Degema LGA

Rivers State

A wave of public concern has followed a recent press statement suggesting that newly distributed ambulances to riverine communities in Degema Local Government Area were provided by the current Sole Administrator. However, credible sources and community leaders have refuted this claim, clarifying that the ambulances were, in fact, procured by former LGA Chairman, Dr. Agiriye Monima Harry.

During his tenure, Dr. Harry initiated the acquisition and distribution of “Keke” ambulances—tricycle-modified emergency vehicles—as part of his healthcare intervention strategy for the region. The initiative was aimed at mitigating the challenges faced by riverine communities in accessing timely medical attention.

“The Keke ambulances were part of Dr. Agiriye Monima Harry’s campaign promise to improve healthcare delivery, especially in hard-to-reach areas,” a community spokesperson stated. “It is disheartening to see attempts to misrepresent this genuine act of service.”

Residents of Degema and surrounding communities have expressed appreciation for Dr. Harry’s proactive approach to community health. Many credit his administration for prioritizing the needs of marginalized areas and taking steps to address long-standing infrastructural and healthcare gaps.

Meanwhile, the Sole Administrator of Degema LGA Dr. Sokari Francis is reportedly poised to distribute the ambulances to key riverine communities, including Tombia and Bukuma. In a recent statement, the Sole Administrator reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people of Degema, affirming that the deployment of the ambulances would be done equitably and effectively.

“We urge all parties to uphold transparency and accuracy in communicating government efforts,” the community spokesperson added. “Giving credit where it is due fosters trust and encourages leaders to continue serving with integrity.”
