DBI Foundation & Homes Holds Project Launch Event For DBI Children’s Village

The David Bassey Ikpeme (DBI) Foundation & Homes on May 16, 2026, held the Project Launch Event of the DBI Children’s Village at Azny Place, Opposite Aldgate Hotel, Off Abacha Road, GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The David Bassey Ikpeme (DBI) Foundation founded by Ambassador Mrs. Koko Crusto, is a Nigerian Non-Governmental Organization formally launched in 2007 to provide social and healthcare services to orphans and vulnerable children in the Niger Delta.

In nearly two decades, the DBI Foundation has worked at all levels to improve the wellbeing of over 40,000 community-based orphans and vulnerable children at risk for, and affected by HIV/AIDS in the Niger Delta. The Foundation’s approach strengthens child safety and protection, nutrition, health, education and other critical support services.

At DBI, programs are tailored to meet the age-specific needs of children.

This reach into community-based service has been made possible through collaborations with implementing partners including FHI 360, Save the Children International and Center for Clinical Care and Research Nigeria (CCCRN), alongside Federal and State agencies, Nigerian private and public sector partners, as well as individuals.

DBI Foundation also provides alternative care services to displaced children, children without parental care, rape survivors, children living with HIV and children with special needs at the DBI Model Transit Home situated at Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The organization is governed by a reputable Board of Trustees comprising professionals with extensive experience in their respective fields and key management personnel that possess years of experience in community development, alternative care services and HIV case management.

DBI Foundation is headquartered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with a regional office in Calabar, Cross River State, supported by staff, volunteers and HIV case managers across represented communities.

The DBI Model Children’s Home began operations in 2008 with an intake of five children at Rumuibekwe Estate, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Out of the five children, four are currently undergraduates studying Law, Chemical Engineering, Business Management and Laboratory Science, while the youngest is currently in Senior Secondary School and aspires to become an Electrical Engineer.

During the event the Founder also shared one of its success stories involving a family of three children — a boy and his two younger sisters — who joined the home in 2011 after losing their mother. Fifteen years later, the boy is now a Polytechnic graduate of Library Studies, the eldest girl is a fashion designer in Abuja, while the youngest is a Doctor of Optometry from Madonna University currently undergoing her housemanship, with plans to further her education.

In May 2010, DBI Foundation received a free lease donation of a five-bedroom duplex and a four-bedroom staff house situated at Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, from Alabo Dr. Tammy Danagogo. The donation enabled the organization to expand its services in providing shelter and care for more children.

The DBI Home is recognized for providing quality care for children, earning the organization recommendations and recognition from notable quarters. However, the Foundation noted that the current facility has reached full capacity due to health and management regulations, making it difficult to accommodate more children in need of urgent rescue and care which is what birthed the DBI Children’s Village.

The DBI Children’s Village is described as an expansion and upgrade project of the existing organization. The project will be situated on eight plots of land donated by Alabo Dr. Tammy Danagogo.

Standout features of the proposed DBI Children’s Village include a functional sick bay with a consulting doctor and employed nurses, a well-equipped library and study area for all ages, a business skill development unit, outdoor gaming field, a well-managed baby unit, separate living quarters for boys and girls with attached caregiver rooms, safe spaces for child survivors of rape, a literacy centre, STEM educational facility, and a home designed to provide safety, comfort and growth for over 60 children.

The general project objective is to provide temporary quality alternative care options for vulnerable children who have lost parental care, while also strengthening families and communities to reduce child abandonment and neglect.

The Founder Ambassador Mrs. Koko Crusto, further stated that the project aims to create more sustainable training opportunities for young adults to acquire skills needed for independent living, inspire individual and community transformation, and support sustainable development initiatives and small businesses that will generate income for the running costs of the village.
