The Wife of the Governor of Delta State and Founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, Her Excellency, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, attended the official launch of the OYA Campaign at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba. The campaign, themed “Protecting Our Girls Against Cervical Cancer Through HPV Vaccination,” is a collaboration between Girl Effect and the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency.
Deaconess Oborevwori, represented by the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Catherine Onyeme, described the campaign as a vital step toward safeguarding adolescent girls from cervical cancer. She revealed that over 331,919 girls aged 9 to 14 had received the HPV vaccine since its rollout in May 2024, highlighting the progress made in the fight against cervical cancer.
Deaconess Oborevwori expressed gratitude for the Girl Respects HPV Vaccination Vanguard Award and restated her commitment to girl-child health advocacy. She thanked Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for prioritizing the well-being of Deltans and urged continued awareness on HPV vaccination and good nutrition.
Cervical cancer is a significant health concern in Nigeria, with the country recording 12,000 new cases and 8,000 deaths in 2020. The HPV vaccine has been proven to prevent over 90% of cervical cancer cases, making it a crucial tool in the fight against the disease.
