Denmark Pledges Support for Nigeria’s Maritime Security and Seafarers Training

The Danish government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s maritime sector and exploring new avenues for economic partnership, including seafarers’ training and maritime security. This was disclosed by Denmark’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jens Ole Bach Jansen, during his recent visit to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) headquarters in Lagos.

Highlighting decades of collaboration, Ambassador Jansen noted the significant investments by Danish companies in Nigeria’s maritime industry and expressed optimism for expanding cooperation in areas such as maritime security, professional training, and sector development.

Welcoming the delegation, NIMASA Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola thanked Denmark for its long-standing support, citing successful investments by Danish companies, including APM Terminals, in Lagos, Onne, and Kano ports. He emphasized the potential for further growth in bilateral maritime collaboration.

Key areas of partnership have included training and professional development for maritime security personnel, as well as initiatives to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime digital infrastructure. Denmark is also backing projects like the Ship-in-a-Box (SIAB) simulator in partnership with the UNODC, aimed at enhancing Nigerian maritime law enforcement skills in Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) operations.
