The Edo State Government through its Ministry of Mining, has begun preliminary investigations into the dredging of Ikpoba River with the aim of curbing flooding and exploring potentials for enhancing revenue generation in the State.
According to the Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, who led the inspection, the initiative is to find lasting solution to the incessant challenges of flooding and river overflow on the busy Road. He added that his Team was on the ground to assess the condition of the River to get a firsthand observation of its impact on communities near its bank.
The Director of Mining, Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle reiterated the State Government’s determination of turning challenges into successes, stating that the primary objectives of the project are to generate revenue for the State Government through mining and to mitigate flooding in the host communities. In his words, “As a government, we have found a way of converting our challenges until successes. As a result of the silted river channel, the host communities have been suffering from flooding, hence the Edo State Government is stepping in to desilt while raising revenue for the State Government.”
The Ikpoba community has welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude to the Commissioner for responding to their complaints and requests. The Community representative, Mr. Ken Omusi noted that the River’s siltation has been a longstanding issue, degenerating to erosion and flooding in the area, which had led to loss of lives and properties over the years. He appreciated the Government’s efforts to address the problem and asserted that the project would be of immense benefits.
The successful implementation of the project is expected to have a positive impact on the Community by reducing the risk of flooding and generating revenue for the State Government. The initiative demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to addressing the needs of its citizens and promoting economic development.
Hon Ijegbai was accompanied on the inspection by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Omoruyi Ese Martina; the Director of Mining, Mr. Ihianle; amongst others.
