The Federal Government has disclosed that it will kickstart the production of 1.2 million metric tons of green methanol per year, as part of its drive to reduce shipping decarbonisation to net zero emission by 2050.
Speaking during a summit in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji revealed that the project, tagged “Landmark Green Hydrogen”, will see the initial phase kickstart in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State at the cost of €5.9 billion.
Other dignitaries in attendance include, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, federal lawmakers, representatives of the international maritime organisation amongst others.
The need to actively engage on key solutions to reduce shipping decarbonisation to net zero by 2050 in line with the international maritime organisation’s agenda formed the crux of the summit.
