Governor Fubara Begins Construction of Creek Road Market

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has commenced the construction of the Creek Road Market as part of the state government’s efforts to improve commercial infrastructure and promote economic growth.

The project, which has been described as a key component of the administration’s urban renewal drive, is expected to provide a modern and organized trading environment. Plans for the market include standardized shops, improved sanitation facilities, proper drainage, and enhanced security to support business activities along the Creek Road axis.

Traders operating in the market have expressed appreciation for the commencement of the project but have appealed to the state government to ensure that shops in the new market are allocated to the original shop owners and long-standing traders. Many of them said such consideration would prevent displacement and protect the livelihoods of those who have depended on the market for years.

Several traders emphasized the need for a transparent allocation process, noting that priority should be given to those who previously operated in the market to avoid hardship and uncertainty.

Despite the concerns, traders remain hopeful that the redevelopment will improve business activities and restore the market’s importance as a commercial hub. They called on the government to maintain regular engagement with stakeholders throughout the construction period.

Construction work is ongoing, with the state government assuring that the interests of affected traders will be taken into account as the project progresses.
