Hon. Abiye Davies Installed as Chief, Takes Title “Igbiriye-Elugwe I” in Grand Traditional Ceremony
Traditional rites remain a sacred and deeply revered aspect of cultural identity, upheld with pride by communities across the Niger Delta. In a significant cultural event, the Davies Group of Houses in Igbiri polo honored one of their own, Hon. Abiye Power Davies, by installing him as a chief in March 2026.
The colorful ceremony, held at the Tombia Town Hall, drew an impressive gathering of family members, friends, traditional rulers, and well-wishers, all of whom came to witness the historic occasion following the successful completion of all required traditional rites.
As part of the symbolic rites of installation, Chief Davies was presented with a choice between a yam and a cannon ball. In a moment that underscored his courage and sense of duty, he chose the cannon ball—an enduring symbol of bravery and a defender of his people.
With this, he was conferred with the revered title “Igbiriye-Elugwe I,” marking the beginning of a new chapter in his leadership and service to the community.
Chief Hon. Abiye Power Davies, a former Chairman of Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, a seasoned politician from the time of Governor Peter Odili, is widely recognized for his contributions to governance and community development. His elevation to chieftaincy status further cements his role as a custodian of tradition and a pillar of leadership.
