Investment in Education Still Top Priority for Governor Fubara — SSG

The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, has reaffirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains committed to expanding access to quality education across the state.

Dr. Anabraba stated this on Wednesday while receiving the WAEC Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Ayanfemi Adeniran-Amusan, during a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt.

He said the Governor continues to invest heavily in education, noting the ongoing free WASSCE registration for students in government schools, as well as the approval for CBT centres across all three senatorial districts and the 23 LGAs. The centres, he added, will enhance digital learning and prepare students for modern examinations.

“We are working to ensure the mega and mini centres are ready before your deadline,” he assured, adding that the state is also willing to provide land for WAEC’s Zonal Office.

Earlier, Mr. Adeniran-Amusan pledged WAEC’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the state. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Mr. Alozie Nwala, attended the meeting.

RSG Raises Alarm on Activities of Orphanages, Care Homes

In a separate meeting, Dr. Anabraba met with officials of NAPTIP, led by the Assistant Director of Intelligence, Barr. Ikediashi Nwamaka.

The SSG commended the agency for protecting vulnerable people but expressed concern over unwholesome practices in some orphanages and care homes, including child trafficking, exploitation of underaged girls, and unregulated surrogacy.

He said the state government is working on legislation to curb these abuses and strengthen protection for women and children.
