Muammar Gaddafi’s Son, Saif al-Islam, Reportedly Killed
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader, Col. Muammar Gaddafi, has reportedly been killed.
According to reports, the 53-year-old was shot on Tuesday, February 3, in the western Libyan city of Zintan, where he had been based for more than a decade. The incident was confirmed by the head of his political team, as reported by the Libyan News Agency.
His sister also told Libyan television that he died near Libya’s border with Algeria, though she did not disclose further details surrounding the incident.
Following the development, Khaled al-Mishri, former head of the Tripoli-based High State Council, called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the killing.
Saif al-Islam never held an official government position but was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Libya during his father’s rule from 1969 to 2011. He was often seen as his father’s potential successor.
After the fall of the Gaddafi government in 2011, he was captured in Zintan while attempting to flee the country and was held in detention. He was later released in 2017 under a general pardon.
His reported death has renewed concerns about political instability and security challenges in Libya.
