Nigeria Commissions First Crude Oil Terminal in 50 Years — FSO Cawthorne in Rivers State
Nigeria has marked a historic achievement in its oil and gas sector with the commissioning of FSO Cawthorne, a 2.2 million-barrel capacity Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel, located in Rivers State. The project is a joint venture by NNPC Limited, Sahara Group, Eroton E&P, and Bilton Energy.
The FSO Cawthorne represents Nigeria’s first new crude oil terminal in 50 years, symbolizing the nation’s renewed commitment to energy innovation, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth.
Strategically positioned in Rivers State, the facility will serve as a key hub for crude storage and export, enhancing production reliability and supporting the country’s drive for energy independence.
In a statement, Sahara Group hailed the milestone as “a bold symbol of how partnership and innovation can power Nigeria’s energy future,” reaffirming its commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions responsibly across Africa and beyond.
With its state-of-the-art design and significant storage capacity, the FSO Cawthorne is set to boost Nigeria’s crude export potential and strengthen the country’s oil and gas infrastructure.
