A posthumous birthday celebration and Holy Communion Thanksgiving Service in honor of the late Ambassador Nne Furo Kurubo is currently taking place at St. Jude’s Military Church (Protestant), 33 Birabi Street, New GRA Phase 1, Port Harcourt.
Ambassador Kurubo, who passed away on February 12, 2025, would have turned 84 today. A distinguished diplomat and public servant, she served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago and contributed immensely to national development.
She was born into the family of Eze Sir Daniel Okereke of Okpala, Ngor Okpala Autonomous Community in Imo State, and for married to married to the late Brigadier General George T. Kurubo of the Grand Bonny Kingdom in Rivers State.
Ambassador Kurubo was a trailblazer in various capacities. She founded the Old Students’ Association of Archdeacon Crowther Memorial Girls’ School (ACMGS) and was the first president of the Air Force Officers’ Wives Association. She also served as a principal at Holy Rosary Girls’ Secondary School, where she mentored and shaped the lives of numerous students.
Her illustrious career spanned decades in both the civil and public sectors. She began as a schoolteacher and rose through the ranks to become a principal, administrator, and permanent secretary. Her unwavering dedication to service led her to serve in the Rivers State Government before assuming the prestigious role of Nigeria’s Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago from 1999 to 2003.
A devout Christian, Ambassador Kurubo lived a life rooted in faith, service, and integrity. “She remained committed to these values until her last breath,” her family shared.
During a heartfelt tribute, the Old Students’ Association of ACMGS honored her for not only founding the association but also single-handedly financing it—even during her illness. They spoke of her generosity and impact beyond their circle.
Delivering the sermon, the pastor at St. Jude’s Military Church drew from Romans 5:19, encouraging her children and family to uphold her legacy through commitment to faith and service.
The service concluded with Holy Communion for members of the church, marking a solemn and reverent farewell to a truly remarkable woman.
She is survived by her children, including Colonel Boma Kurubo, Mr. Gogo Kurubo, and Mrs. Kalanne Gigi Ojukwu, as well as her siblings, Dr. Tati Okereke and Prof. (Mrs.) Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, among other cherished family members.
