Rivers State

Rivers Chief Judge replied Martins Amaewhule, stating reasons he cannot constitute impeachment panel

A letter allegedly written by the Chief Judge of Rivers State to the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has surfaced online.

In the letter, the Chief Judge acknowledged receiving the House’s resolution to set up a seven-man impeachment panel against Governor Siminalayi Fubara but stated that he is restrained by a subsisting High Court order from taking any further action.

The court order followed a suit by the Governor and his Deputy, who challenged the impeachment process over alleged improper service of the impeachment notice.

The leaked document also shows that the Speaker and the Rivers State House of Assembly have already appealed the High Court order, with the appeal expressly noted in the same letter.

Despite the development, the Speaker has remained silent, and the letter has not been officially released to the public.

Rivers State’s impeachment battle is now firmly in the courts.
