Grand Bonny, Rivers State — The ancient Grand Bonny Kingdom came alive in a dazzling display of culture, unity, and royalty as His Majesty, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, CON, DSSRS, JP, Edward I, Perekule XI, Natural Ruler and Amayanabo of Grand Bonny, marked his 60th birthday with a grand celebration.

The milestone event drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, captains of industry, and well-wishers from across the Niger Delta and beyond, in honour of the monarch’s enduring reign and contributions to the cultural and political landscape of the region.
The kingdom, known for its deep-rooted traditions, rallied together to make the occasion unforgettable. The celebration featured the thunderous echoes of canon fire, colourful masquerade displays, and cultural presentations by various houses within the kingdom all paying tribute to the revered king.
In an emotional address, His Majesty gave thanks to God and expressed heartfelt appreciation to the people of Grand Bonny Kingdom. “Every day has been a blessing, and every season has shaped me to be who I am today,” he said. The king pledged to continue upholding the dignity and values of the ancient kingdom.
King Edward Asimini ascended the throne at the age of 31. He was proclaimed king on Saturday, April 6, 1996, and officially crowned on December 21, 1996. Over nearly three decades, his leadership has brought stability, cultural revival, and global recognition to Grand Bonny Kingdom.
The celebration not only honoured a black monarch but also highlighted the unity and cultural strength of one of Nigeria’s most historic kingdoms.
