President Bola Tinubu has approved a N20 billion take-off fund for the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to implement its long-delayed space regulation and licensing mandate.
NASRDA’s Director-General, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, confirmed the approval in an interview, stating that the agency has lacked regulatory enforcement since its establishment in 1999. The funding will enable Nigeria to manage its space sector, regulate spectrum usage, and oversee satellite operations.
Adepoju emphasized the importance of licensing space activities to prevent misuse and ensure national security. He also noted that while the funds are yet to be disbursed, the agency has set up the necessary framework to begin its regulatory functions.
The initiative is expected to enhance security, drive economic diversification, and boost revenue in key sectors reliant on space technology, such as oil and gas, telecommunications, and shipping.
