UK Envoy Urges Nigerians Security Agencies To Implement 2026-2030 Gender Politics

The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Hill Obe, has called on Nigerian security agencies to fully implement the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Gender Policy II (2026–2030).

Ms Obe made the appeal during the inauguration of the policy on Tuesday in Abuja, stressing that policies are only effective when translated into daily practice, leadership appointments, training, deployment, and organizational culture.

“So I encourage every officer, male or female, to keep pushing forward, as strong leadership, adequate resourcing, continuous learning, and collective accountability will be essential for this policy to reach its full potential,” she said.

She described the policy as inclusive, highlighting its focus on technology-facilitated gender-based violence, gender-responsive budgeting, monitoring, and accountability systems. The envoy added that its inauguration signals a strong commitment to women, peace, and security, and marks a step toward a more resilient Nigeria.

Ms Obe also praised NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Audi for establishing a gender desk aimed at increasing women’s representation within the corps.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, represented by the NSCDC Commandant General, noted that the new policy builds on lessons from the first and expressed optimism about the support and partnerships that would ensure its success. “The inclusion of women is critical,” he said, “especially as most victims of asymmetric conflicts are women and children. Establishing the gender desk is central to the operations of the corps.”

Ukoha Ukiwo, team leader of Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG), commended the NSCDC for the partnership and expressed hope that the policy would strengthen prevention, reporting, and prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence. He added that effective implementation would enhance public trust in security agencies and reduce instances of self-help violence.
