FFCDAIN Holds Annual Child Diabetes Awareness Event in Port Harcourt

The Foundation for Child Diabetes Awareness in Nigeria (FFCDAIN) has successfully hosted its annual Child Diabetes Awareness Programme at Kolocraft, Port Harcourt, bringing together parents, caregivers, medical professionals, and children for a day dedicated to education, health, and empowerment.

In her opening remarks, the host, Amieye, encouraged parents to seek timely guidance and support, stressing that diabetes is not a death sentence. She noted that with proper management, children living with diabetes can lead healthy, fulfilling, and productive lives.

The event featured several interactive and educational sessions, including expert presentations on fitness and wellbeing, highlighting the importance of regular physical activity in strengthening the body and improving health outcomes for diabetic children.

A dietician also delivered a detailed session on carbohydrate counting, balanced nutrition, and portion control. She emphasized that diabetes does not mean a child must completely avoid certain foods; rather, maintaining balance, making healthy choices, and managing portions are critical to effective diabetes care. Maintaining a healthy weight was also a key part of the discussion.

In addition to the learning sessions, the programme created a warm and supportive environment through games, gifts for children, medical checks, and various family-friendly activities, offering participants a well-rounded and engaging experience.

FFCDAIN’s activities continue to shine a spotlight on issues affecting children living with diabetes in Nigeria, ensuring that diabetes remains prominent in public health conversations.

The annual campaign provides a platform that connects diabetic children, healthcare professionals, advocates, the media, and government agencies promoting awareness, strengthening support systems, and enhancing the quality of life for affected children.

The Foundation also collaborates with medical experts, pharmacies, and diabetic supply distributors to improve access to essential care. This includes negotiating reduced rates for consultations with endocrinologists and primary healthcare doctors, ensuring that more children receive comprehensive and affordable treatment.
