MEASLES VACCINATION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN RIVERS STATE

Rivers State

The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Rivers State Chapter Partners with Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board to announce its commitment to championing the measles vaccination awareness campaign across the state.

Dr. Babbo Diana, the State Health Educator, emphasized the critical need for increased public awareness of the importance of measles immunization, particularly ahead of the peak measles season, which typically begins in November and extends into late January.

Dr Diana stated that Measles is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease that spreads through airborne transmission and can cause serious complications such as blindness, severe diarrhea, pneumonia, and even death in unimmunized children.

According to her, vaccination remains the most effective method of preventing the spread of this disease and safeguarding the lives of children in Rivers State.

In her response, Chairperson NAWOJ RIVERS STATE CHAPTER Susan Serekara-Nwikhana said “As women journalists, we understand the important role that the media plays in shaping public opinion and behavior, and we are committed to using our platforms to disseminate accurate, life-saving information. This partnership will ensure that every parent in the state is aware of the free vaccination programs available, and the importance of vaccinating their children before the measles season peaks.”

Through this collaboration, NAWOJ Rivers State will engage in extensive media campaigns, community outreach programs, and other public education initiatives to encourage parents to vaccinate their children, particularly in the months of September and October, to prevent outbreaks.

Chairperson Susan urged all media outlets, community leaders, and public health stakeholders to join forces in this campaign to ensure that no child is left vulnerable to this preventable disease.
