RIVCASSON Marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025 in Port Harcourt

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD) 2025 was celebrated in Port Harcourt from December 1 to 3 with radio outreach, sensitization campaigns, free counselling in schools, religious institutions, workplaces, healthcare centres, and community advocacy. The event, led by the Rivers State Chapter of the Counselling Association of Nigeria (RIVCASSON), highlighted its commitment to disability inclusion and social progress.

The celebrations began on December 1, when Dr. Daughter Nna, committee chairman of IDPwD 2025, visited Save A Life 88.9 FM, Rumuomasi, to highlight RIVCASSON’s efforts on HIV/AIDS, disability inclusion, and social progress.

On December 2, RIVCASSON chairman Comr Austin T. Jonah PhD, with Prof. C.J. Ugwu and Tamunokuro Abel Chima Briggs PhD, appeared on Rhythm 93.7 FM, Old GRA, discussing CASSON, CPCN, CIN, and licensing of counselling practitioners, emphasizing a disability-inclusive society. Counsellors also continued advocacy in schools and communities.

On December 3, advocates Evang. Stainless, Dr. Deborah Agu, and Dr. Ijeoma Egege led a radio discussion on inclusive counselling and disability inclusion on Wish 99.5 FM, Port Harcourt. Counsellors visited classrooms and markets to promote inclusive education and societal integration. The day featured an awareness walk along Ikwerre Road to showcase counselling services and advocate for attitudinal change toward persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The highlight was at Community Secondary School (CSS) Nkpolu Oroworokwo, featuring inclusive high tables, sign language expressions, participation from special schools and homes, and lectures by Prof. J.B. Kinanee and Prof. Chinelo Ugwu on “Fostering a Disability-Inclusive Society”, leaving a strong impact.

RIVCASSON was praised for organizing the event in partnership with Save A Life 88.9 FM, Rhythm 93.7 FM, Gilt Consult, Ignatius Ajuru University, Rivers State University, University of Port Harcourt, and Special Schools.
