The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS, today reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the advancement of education within the state, emphasizing significant investments made in tertiary institutions. The Governor made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) led by its Chairman, Hon. Miriam Odinaka Onuoha, at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

Governor Fubara expressed pride in the state’s achievements, highlighting the strides made in elevating the standards of Rivers State University. “Our state has done exceptionally well in supporting tertiary institutions. Our universities are on par with some of the best in the country, thanks to the level of investment we’ve made. If you visit Rivers State University today, the development, quality of structures, and manpower will speak for themselves. This shows the priority we place on education in our state,” the Governor stated.

The Governor also urged the TETFund Committee to facilitate the timely release of funds, which he assured would be judiciously applied to further improve the state’s tertiary institutions. “We appreciate your recognition of our efforts and your support. It is crucial that we access these funds to continue our work, ensuring that our institutions remain models of excellence. When you return for inspection, you will see the results and, I hope, be even more impressed,” he added.

Governor Fubara further disclosed plans to enhance primary and secondary education in the state, noting that a recent study revealed disappointing results. “The foundation of education lies in primary schooling, which we have unfortunately neglected in favor of higher institutions. From next year, our focus will shift to building a strong educational base, ensuring that future developments stand the test of time,” the Governor emphasized.

In her remarks, Hon. Miriam Odinaka Onuoha, Chairman of the TETFund Committee, commended Governor Fubara for his administration’s achievements in the education sector. She lauded the Governor’s efforts in promoting civil servants, recruiting qualified personnel for critical sectors, and maintaining peace during the recent nationwide strike.

“I want to commend the people of Rivers State, particularly the women and youths, for heeding the Governor’s call for peace during the strike. Their conduct aligned with global best practices, ensuring that critical infrastructure, including educational institutions, remained unharmed,” Hon. Onuoha said.

She also praised the heads of tertiary institutions in Rivers State for their prudent management of resources. “Compared to other states, Rivers State has done relatively well, with fewer outstanding obligations. Our committee’s visit aims to prevent funds from becoming dormant, which could lead to their reallocation for other public interests. We are here to ensure that these resources are utilized effectively for the benefit of your institutions,” she added.
