The LG chairmen in Rivers State have made a bold declaration, asserting their intention to remain in office beyond the expiration of their tenure in June. Out of the 23 LG chairmen, 21 have announced their decision, citing the recently amended law that grants them the authority to extend their stay in office for an additional six months.
According to the chairmen, the delay in conducting the LG elections, coupled with Governor Sim Fubara’s apparent lack of interest in the matter, has left them with no choice but to assert their rights under the amended law. They argue that the law, as amended by the Rivers State House of Assembly, explicitly allows them to stay in office for an additional six months beyond the expiration of their tenure.
In light of these circumstances, the chairmen have resolved to remain in office, confident in their legal standing and determined to uphold the provisions of the amended law. Their decision reflects a firm commitment to serving their communities and fulfilling their duties as elected officials, despite the challenges and uncertainties surrounding the electoral process.
